The cave of Mitterrand.
A'eo, which means "frightening", is the real name of the cave which has become known as the Mitterand cave since the visit of French President, François Mitterand, in 1990. Situated in the district of Vitaria on the island of Rurutu, it is home to some magnificent stalagmites and stalactites, which light up the interior when the sun reaches them. Formerly a site of worship, sacrifice and cannibalism, it is a mysterious and important part of the island and its history.
