Lac Vaihiria

Lake Vaihiria is the only natural lake in Tahiti. It was formed when a large part of the east of the island collapsed and great blocks of volcanic rock fell down, making a dam which blocked the whole width of the valley for 800 meters. At the beginning of the 1980s, EDT ENGIE , the Tahitian electricity company, built an important hydroelectric plant to produce electricity from the water running from the lake. The floor of the lake was lined with black plastic and turbines were installed.
The valley boasts a luxuriant vegetation and is rich in legends and history. The best way to visit lake Vahiria is with on an ATV safari.
