Getting to the Marquesas Islands

It takes time to get to the Marquesas Islands and to travel from one island to the next. Air Tahiti and Air Moana operate a weekly 3 hour and 20 minute direct flight from Papeete. It takes 50 minutes to fly flight from Nuku Hiva to Hiva Oa. There are also passenger ferries between the islands and cruise ships which visit regularly.

Getting around in the Marquesas Islands

You should organize your transfer from the airport with your travel agent or directly with your accommodation. For traveling around while you’re there, you can generally rent a four-wheel drive car. The roads are often very steep and sometimes in poor condition, so it’s preferable to go on a guided tour to explore the island. A boat trip is the best way to see some of the majestic bays and the impressive, rocky coastine.

Are there direct flights to the Marquesas Islands?

Two domestic airlines fly directly to Nuku Hiva from Papeete. Small planes and boats operate inter-island services.
